Pittsfield Doctor uses PillCam to Examine Patients
Millions of americans suffer from chronic heartburn or GERD --- that's when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus.
The condition can be a sign of a serious disease -- so doctors like to check certain patients out..
For years -- they've inserted a device called an endoscope down the throat to get an inside look.
The procedure requires sedation and is not very comfortable for the patient -- but now a new option is out there.
Dr. Ira Schmelkin, a gastroenterologist at Central Berkshire Gastroenterology in Pittsfield is now using something called the PillCam ESO. The PillCam has a camera attached to each end. When the patient swallows it, in a matter of minutes the pictures are transmitted to Dr. Schmelkin's computer so he can get a good view of the esophagus.
