Schenectady woman arrested for neglect after she couldn't afford pet care

SCHENECTADY -- The Schenectady County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals arrested a Schenectady woman on misdemeanor charges of neglecting an animal on Tuesday.

The SPCA said Elizabeth Moshier took her six-month old pit bull puppy to the vet on Oct. 22 to be treated for a broken leg, but she couldn’t afford the $600 it would cost.  The SPCA says Moshier told the Vet she would seek cheaper care for her dog.

Her puppy had still not been helped as of Nov. 2 when a veterinarian called to follow up, SPCA spokesman David Dean said.

The vet has since taken ownership of the puppy and provided the necessary medical care.

Moshier was arrested Tuesday and charged with misdemeanor neglect.

The Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society says more and more owners are dropping their pets off because they just can't afford them in these tough times.

The SPCA said anyone who can’t afford proper pet care should contact the group for information on financial assistance.
