You Paid For It: Schenectady's clock that doesn't tick
SCHENECTADY -- Why is time standing still in downtown Schenectady?
That’s the question posed by a CBS 6 viewer who wants to know why the clock known as “Little Ben” at the corner of State and Broadway is stuck at 10:10.
The vintage looking clock was paid for with nearly $30,000 of your taxpayer money, so why is it on the fritz?
CBS 6 took that question directly to Mayor Brian Stratton, who says it’s due to a construction project down the street. Stratton says the power unit that controls the clock is in the basement of the Center City building.
That building is currently undergoing a major renovation, and while work is being done, the clock’s power unit had to be turned off.
Mayor Stratton says he hopes the clock will be up and running again in a matter of weeks. He said the city considered covering it with a tarp or a city seal, but in the end just decided to leave it stuck in place. And as he is quick to point out, at least it’s right twice a day.
