Long Island mom charged with DWI after daughter calls 911
SOUTHEAST -- A Long Island mother has been arrested on drunken driving charges in upstate New York after her 12-year-old daughter called 911 while in the vehicle.
State Police say 49-year-old Jamie Hicks was driving with her two children near Brewster when she was stopped Sunday night after her daughter called 911 to say her mother was driving drunk.
Police say Hicks, of Islip, had a blood-alcohol content of 0.18, more than twice the legal limit of .08. She was charged under the new Leandra's Law which makes it a felony to drive drunk with minors in a vehicle and released on $2,000 bond. She's due back in court Aug. 17.
The arrest comes almost one year after Diane Schuler drove the wrong way and hit an SUV, killing eight. Authorities say the West Babylon mother had been drinking heavily and smoking marijuana, which her husband disputes.
