National Guard gears up for New Year's security
LATHAM -- Members of the New York National Guard will be providing extra security support to New York City and the state over the New Year's holiday.
At the direction of Gov. David Paterson, members of the New York Army and Air National Guard will conduct additional security missions and stand ready to respond if an emergency occurs.
In New York City, National Guard soldiers and airmen will be on duty at Penn Station, the PATH terminal, and LaGuardia and JFK airports.
The airport security measures directed by Paterson earlier this week were the result of the failed terrorist bombing on Christmas Day of a plane in Detroit.
The National Guard's 2nd Civil Support Team based in Scotia will provide a detachment to Manhattan specializing in chemical, biological or radiological hazards.
