Annual 105-mile Hudson River kayak journey launches today
ALBANY -- The tenth annual Great Hudson River Paddle launches this morning at Albany's Corning Preserve.
Participants will kayak 105 miles over eight days from Albany to Peekskill, camping out in state and local parks along the way. Some will go the whole way and others will join the fleet of paddlers for only a portion of the journey.
The event is designed to celebrate the 256-mile-long Hudson River Greenway Water Trail, the improvement of public access to the Hudson River and the Champlain Canal, and the diversity and heritage of riverside communities.
Today's paddle is 15 miles from Albany to New Baltimore.
To date, the Hudson River Greenway has designated 90 sites as part of the Water Trail, installed a dozen informational kiosks, set up 65 kayak and gear storage racks for use by visitors, and awarded nearly $400,000 in Water Trail Grants to create new or improve existing sites along the water trail.
