Barn fire in Colonie, Dec. 23, 2009

Colonie horse stables destroyed in fire

COLONIE -- Kids who ride horses at the New Horizon Stables are being called heroes after firefighters say they ran into a burning barn to rescue 18 horses.

The fire broke out shortly before 5pm Wednesday night.

All the horses were rescued and thankfully no-one was injured.

The fire did destroy two stable barns and tens of thousands of dollars in horse equipment.

Penny Plowman who owns a horse named Magic says the kids and some of the stable hands are heroes for their admirable actions. "The barn was filled with smoke, they were trying to take them out one by one with the lead lines and it got to the point where it was too much smoke so they just opened the doors and some of the horses ran out. Two or three would not come so one of the kids went in there and got the horses out" says Plowman.

Blankets were put on the horses and all were fed after the commotion was over.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause.
