Doc: The biggest flu shot story you haven't heard

New York's homebound population has been forgotten in discussions about the statewide flu shot shortage, a local physician said Friday.

Dr. Roberta Miller, of Home Medical Associates, told CBS 6 that her distributor has none of the potentially life-saving vaccines available. Since her more than 200 patients cannot be immunized at a clinic or store, they will be unprotected if any infectious visitors come calling.

"It's caregivers who come in, it's grandchildren who come in," Dr. Miller said. "Anybody who comes into the house needs to be immunized."

But that seems more and more like a long shot. New York has only received about 23% of the doses it was expecting, according to a press release issued Thursday by the governor's office.

In fact, the Department of Health attributed to the shortage its decision to lift the controversial mandate requiring most health care workers to be immunized against the seasonal and swine flu (H1N1).

Dr. Miller blamed the short supply of the seasonal flu vaccine on production problems and national "maldistribution," questioning why chain stores received shipments and clinicians did not.

According to data provided by one of Dr. Miller's colleagues, the following locations are still offering seasonal flu shots "on various dates" (unless otherwise noted):
