A Columbia County fire killed about 40 cows Thursday afternoon, according to CBS6 crews on the scene.
The Miller dairy farm at 251 Empire Road in Copake went up in flames at about 3 p.m., trapping the cows inside two barns. Neighbors say about 115 cows live on the farm.
Rescue crews and neighbors tried to free the cows from the barns, which burned quickly because the barns were packed with hay for the cows.
Seven volunteers fire companies from Columbia and Dutchess counties assisted at the scene. A cause is still unknown.
