County clerks to meet over license plate plan

Letter to AG questions legality of move

Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola says he sent a letter to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo last week asking whether it is legal at the moment for the state to require New Yorkers to pay for new license plates.

Merola said he and at least 51 other county clerks from around the state plan to meet next week to discuss how to handle Governor David Paterson's plan to charge residents $25.00 for new plates starting in the spring.  Merola says there are 52 clerks who run DMV offices.  The meeting, to be held somewhere in Herkimer County, is open to all county clerks.

The governor's plan to charge New Yorkers for new plates is part of his effort to close a multi-billion dollar budget deficit.
